Over 10,000 athletes from 170 countries compete across 30 different sports at these games making them the second largest sporting event in the world after only the Olympic Games themselves!
What Does Fisu Stand For?
The Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) is the international governing body for university sports. The federation represents over 170 national university sports federations and organises world championships in a wide range of sporting disciplines.
FISU was founded in 1949, with its headquarters currently based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The organisation works to promote and develop university sport across the globe, whilst also providing support to national federations in their efforts to grow the university sports movement within their countries.
One of FISU’s main priorities is ensuring that university athletes are able to compete at the highest level possible, whilst also maintaining their academic commitments. To this end, the federation oversees various world championships and other international competitions each year.
In addition to its work in promoting and developing university sport, FISU is also active in supporting educational programmes related to physical activity and health. Through its University Sport Education Programme (USEP), the federation offers seminars and workshops on topics such as doping prevention, nutrition, anti-doping education and more.

The World Games 2023

This will be the first time that the World University Games will be held in China.
Fisu World University Games Lake Placid
The Fisu World University Games are an international sporting event that takes place every two years. The games are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and are open to athletes who are enrolled in a college or university.
The Lake Placid edition of the Fisu World University Games will take place from March 8-19, 2023.
This will be the second time that the games have been held in Lake Placid, with the first edition taking place in 1973.

In addition to Taipei, various cities have hosted the games including: Beijing, China; Naples, Italy; Sheffield, England; Kazan, Russia; Gwangju, South Korea; and Denver, United States.
Hockey has been a part of the World University Games since they started in 1923. Men’s hockey was first included in the 1959 Winter Universiade and women’s hockey made its debut at the 1985 Summer Universiade. There are currently no plans to include hockey at the 2017 Summer Universiade due to a lack of available ice rinks in Taipei.
Over the years, numerous NHL players have competed in the World University Games including: Mike Modano (North Dakota), Tony Amonte (Boston College), Brian Leetch (Boston College), Jeremy Roenick (Wisconsin) and Chris Chelios (Wisconsin). More recently, Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane represented Team USA at the 2007 Winter Universiade where he won a gold medal.

Work is also underway on a new athletes’ village, media centre and other support facilities. The official slogan for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games is “Joyful Rendezvous upon Pure Ice and Snow” (). This slogan was chosen through a public competition which received over 320,000 entries from around China.
