What are Fisu Games?
The FISU Games are an international multi-sport event for university athletes, organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The Games are held every two years, in even-numbered years. The first edition was held in 1949.
There are currently four FISU Games: the Summer Universiade, the Winter Universiade, the World University Championships and the World University Games. The Summer Universiade is the largest of the four events, with over 10,000 athletes competing in 21 different sports. The most recent edition was held in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei, in 2017.
The Winter Universiade is an international winter sports event for university athletes. It is second to only the Olympic Winter Games in terms of athlete numbers, with over 2,500 athletes from 57 countries competing in 11 different sports. The most recent edition was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 2017.
The World University Championships are a series of international sporting events for university athletes organised by FISU. There are currently 19 championships on the programme. The most recent editions were held across various locations including Gwangju (South Korea), Kazan (Russia) and Bangkok (Thailand).
Finally, the World University Games are a biennial multi-sport event for university athletes which takes place every two years – alternating between Summer and Winter editions. Over 10,000 athletes from 170 countries compete across 30 different sports at these games making them the second largest sporting event in the world after only the Olympic Games themselves!
What Does Fisu Stand For?
The Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) is the international governing body for university sports. The federation represents over 170 national university sports federations and organises world championships in a wide range of sporting disciplines.
FISU was founded in 1949, with its headquarters currently based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The organisation works to promote and develop university sport across the globe, whilst also providing support to national federations in their efforts to grow the university sports movement within their countries. One of FISU’s main priorities is ensuring that university athletes are able to compete at the highest level possible, whilst also maintaining their academic commitments. To this end, the federation oversees various world championships and other international competitions each year.
In addition to its work in promoting and developing university sport, FISU is also active in supporting educational programmes related to physical activity and health. Through its University Sport Education Programme (USEP), the federation offers seminars and workshops on topics such as doping prevention, nutrition, anti-doping education and more. World University Games 2023 Qualifying Standards

The World Games 2023
The World Games 2023 will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. The event is being organized by the International World Games Association (IWGA).
The games are scheduled to take place from July 7-17, 2023 and will feature 32 sports with a total of 3,600 athletes expected to compete.
This will mark the first time that the World Games will be held in the United States. Some of the sports that are set to be contested include archery, badminton, bowling, dance sport, field hockey, roller skating, softball and ultimate frisbee. There will also be four demonstration sports: beach handball, Muay Thai boxing, arm wrestling and weightlifting.

The World University Games are an international multi-sport event for university athletes. The Games are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The 2024 World University Games will be held in Chengdu, China from August 8 to 19, 2024.
This will be the first time that the World University Games will be held in China.
Fisu World University Games Lake Placid
The Fisu World University Games are an international sporting event that takes place every two years. The games are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and are open to athletes who are enrolled in a college or university.
The Lake Placid edition of the Fisu World University Games will take place from March 8-19, 2023.
This will be the second time that the games have been held in Lake Placid, with the first edition taking place in 1973. Athletes from all over the world will compete in a variety of winter sports, including alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, nordic combined, short track speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, snowboarding, and speed skating. The World University Games began in 1923 and are held every other year. The 2017 Summer Universiade will be held in Taipei, Chinese Taipei from August 19 – 30. In addition to Taipei, various cities have hosted the games including: Beijing, China; Naples, Italy; Sheffield, England; Kazan, Russia; Gwangju, South Korea; and Denver, United States.
Hockey has been a part of the World University Games since they started in 1923. Men’s hockey was first included in the 1959 Winter Universiade and women’s hockey made its debut at the 1985 Summer Universiade. There are currently no plans to include hockey at the 2017 Summer Universiade due to a lack of available ice rinks in Taipei.
Over the years, numerous NHL players have competed in the World University Games including: Mike Modano (North Dakota), Tony Amonte (Boston College), Brian Leetch (Boston College), Jeremy Roenick (Wisconsin) and Chris Chelios (Wisconsin). More recently, Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane represented Team USA at the 2007 Winter Universiade where he won a gold medal.

Winter Olympics 2023 Schedule
The XXIV Olympic Winter Games will be held in 2023 in Beijing, China. This will be the first time that the Winter Olympics have been held in China, and the second time that they have been held in Asia (after Sapporo, Japan in 1972). Beijing was awarded the hosting rights for the 2022 Winter Olympics on 31 July 2015 at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. These Games will mark the return of the Winter Olympics to China after it hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The estimated cost of hosting the Games is $3 billion.
Most of these costs are expected to be borne by central and local governments as well as private investors. As of June 2019, construction work related to venues and infrastructure for the Games is underway. In January 2019, a ceremony was held to mark the start of construction on two new competition venues – a speed skating oval and a big air snowboarding venue.
Work is also underway on a new athletes’ village, media centre and other support facilities. The official slogan for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games is “Joyful Rendezvous upon Pure Ice and Snow” (). This slogan was chosen through a public competition which received over 320,000 entries from around China.
