The Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire, more commonly known as FISU, is the international governing body for university sports. Founded in 1949, FISU’s mission is to promote physical education and sport at the university level and to support the development of student-athletes worldwide.
FISU oversees both Summer and Winter Universiades – multi-sport events that are second only to the Olympic Games in terms of participants – as well as a variety of other sporting competitions for university students.
In total, FISU sanctions more than 30 world championships across a wide range of sports.
In addition to organizing and promoting international sporting competitions, FISU also works to develop the next generation of leaders in sport. The federation does this through its University Sport Leadership Programme, which offers young people from around the world an opportunity to gain valuable experience working within the international university sports movement.
