The World Games are an international multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Games are held every four years, following the Summer Olympics. The 2021 World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, United States from July 7 to 17, while the 2024 edition has been provisionally awarded to Berlin, Germany.
The first edition of the World Games was held in New Haven, Connecticut, United States in 1968. Since then, the event has been staged in cities around the world including Barcelona (Spain), Rome (Italy), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Victoria (Canada), Yokohama (Japan) and Warsaw (Poland).
Over 2,500 athletes from more than 100 countries competed at the last edition of the World Games in Wrocław, Poland in 2017.
The sports programme for the Birmingham 2021 World Games will feature 24 disciplines across 14 sports.
Winter University Games General Regulations
The FISU Winter University Games are an international sporting event that takes place every two years. The Games are open to all currently enrolled university students, from anywhere in the world, who meet the eligibility criteria set out by FISU. There are a total of nine sports on the programme for the Winter University Games, which are: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, short track speed skating, snowboarding and wrist curling.
In order to be eligible to compete at the Winter University Games, athletes must: – Be aged between 17 and 28 years old (as of 1 January in the year of the Games); – Be currently enrolled as a full-time student at a university or similar institution of higher education;
– Have competed in an official university sport competition recognised by their National University Sports Federation (NUSF) in the 12 months preceding the start of the Games.
